The trestle walk coincides with the big Labor Day walk that takes place every year on the Mackinac Bridge. As part of the event, participants cross the 640 ft. Mill Creek trestle, the longest bridge of its kind in the State of Michigan. Join us as we walk from the Avoca trailhead, across the trestle (for an exhilarating view!) to the Imlay City trailhead and back (5 miles in total) Parking available at the trailhead, across from the Kenockee Twp. This off-kilter dark comedy is about women scorned in Minnesota and the really nice gangsters—Norwegian hit men—they hire to whack their ex-boyfriends. Oofda! Olive and Betty are transplants to Minnesota and weren’t prepared for the Norwegian men they would fall in love with there: the practical, warm, thoughtful, destructive, evil, jilting kind. Betty has referred Olive to Gus and Tor, a partnership in the whacking business. What Tor doesn’t know is that Gus has been sleeping with the clients. What Olive doesn’t know is that Gus is Betty’s own ex, and she has already put out a hit on him. Can Betty call off the job in time to let Gus do his? Should she? You haven’t seen a show like this on the Barn stage!

Two of the most catastrophic wildfires in American history struck Michigan's Thumb just ten years apart — and if you live in this region, this is your history.
In 1871, the same weather system that fueled the Great Chicago Fire swept across the Thumb, killing hundreds and displacing thousands in a matter of hours. Ten years later, before the region had fully recovered, the fires came again. The 1881 Thumb Fire was even more devastating — burning over a million acres and leaving an entire region in ash.
Professional historian Andrew Kercher holds a Master's in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University and spent nearly a decade working in Michigan's museum world. He is one of Michigan's most engaging public history speakers, known for bringing depth, detail, and genuine storytelling to events across the state.
This lecture is part of the Ron & Ann Erickson 2026 Lecture Series. An opening mini-concert by Ourselves begins at 5:00 PM, with the lecture starting at 5:30 PM.

The Great Lakes hold more shipwrecks than anywhere else on earth. And nobody brings those stories to life quite like Ric Mixter.
Mixter is a documentary filmmaker, author, diver, and one of the most requested maritime historians in the Midwest. He has produced over 30 programs for PBS, appeared as a shipwreck expert on the History and Discovery Channels, and dived more than 100 Great Lakes wrecks — including a submersible descent 550 feet down to the Edmund Fitzgerald itself. He has personally interviewed survivors of the 1913 Storm, the 1940 Armistice Day Storm, and some of the largest shipwrecks in the history of Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Erie. His YouTube channel has surpassed five million views. He is a board member of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society and a past president of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association.
This is standing-room-only material. The evening opens at 2:00 PM with a musical program by Jack Broadwell, followed by Ric Mixter's presentation.

You might be surprised how many people in Michigan's Thumb have a Bigfoot story.
Bryan Sawyer has heard them — and he has gone looking for the answers. A Michigan-based actor, producer, and podcaster with film credits including the Steven Soderbergh thriller No Sudden Move, Sawyer is the creator and executive producer of the Bigfoots of Michigan TV and web series and host of The Bigfoots of America Podcast Show. He travels across North America interviewing eyewitnesses, investigating reported sighting locations, and documenting the regional folklore that surrounds one of America's most enduring mysteries. He also serves as an investigator with the North Carolina Investigators on Channel 12 TV Network.
This is not a ghost story campfire session. It is a serious look at the eyewitness accounts, the regional patterns, and the culture of belief that has kept this legend alive for generations — told by someone who has dedicated years to chasing it down.

Join our resident expert on all-things-Edison, Depot Dave Dazer, on a guided tour of the Depot Museum and narrated trolley tour around Port Huron to see the locations and hear the stories of the Edison family and their lives here during and after Thomas' departure to New Jersey. The tour will begin at the Thomas Edison Depot Museum, on the Edison Parkway, beneath the Blue Water Bridges. Guests will board the Port Huron Museums' trolley and visit 6+ locations in Port Huron that are relevant to the Edison story. Reminder, that seating is very limited, so book early! Sanborn Pool is going to the dogs on Aug. 15. Celebrate the dog days of summer and the final day at the pool for 2026.

All dogs should be dog (and people) friendly. Canines must be spayed or neutered, have a rabies vaccine and we strongly suggest Distemper/Parvo and a Bordetella vaccines. Owners need to have written proof of the vaccinations on the day of event. Dog tags do not count. Dogs will not be permitted in the pool without verification of this information. Swimming with dogs is not permitted. Participants may bring more than one dog, but we do require a minimum 1:2 ratio of one person for every two dogs.

Michigan's Thumb is full of quiet dirt roads, wide-open farmland, and big skies. On Saturday, April 24, experience one of the state's most unique ultramarathons by running from Lake Huron in Harbor Beach to Saginaw Bay in Caseville.

Choose from a point-to-point 50 Mile, a flat and fast 50K out-and-back, or gather your friends for the 50 Mile Relay. Whether you're tackling your first ultra, chasing a personal best, or spending the day leapfrogging across the Thumb with a relay team, Thumb Coast is an adventure built around community as much as competition.

The course follows mostly dirt and unimproved rural roads with minimal elevation gain, generous cutoff times, and fully stocked aid stations staffed by an incredible team of volunteers. Ruck divisions are also available in the 50 Mile and 50K. Fifty-mile finishers who reach Caseville before sunset earn a special "Beat the Sun" award.

Registration includes a finisher medal, participant jacket, professional race photography, post-race food, and one of the most welcoming race communities you'll find anywhere.

Interested in volunteering? We'd love to have you on the team. Volunteers help at aid stations, packet pickup, the start and finish lines, course crossings, and more. Every volunteer receives race swag, other perks, and the chance to be part of an unforgettable day for runners, ruckers, and relay teams alike.

ABC stands for Antiques, Bean soup and Collectibles. Among the other attractions:
9:30 a.m. - Dedication of the duck decoy shed.
  •  Great Lakes duck decoy enthusiasts and waterfowl lovers will find a unique and important part of their history preserved by the Port Hope Area Historical Society, on the Lumberyard Museum grounds.
ABC Day - 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. 
  • From Main Street to Stafford County Park in Port Hope.
  • ABC Day is known for its bean soup. A 40-gallon soup cooker, filled with fresh, home-grown ingredients, provides the soup that has become a village tradition. It sells out fast every year.
  • Another ABC Day favorite is the homemade, fresh doughnuts.
  • Craft and food vendors.
  • Vintage car show is again on the lawn east of the Lumberyard Museum, a half-block off M-25 downtown.
  • Echoes of Sanilac: Exploring the History of Michigan’s Thumb is a traveling display that will be at Port Hope’s Lumberyard Museum in the afternoon.
  • The 1904 Train Depot and Caboose is open for free tours.
  • Walkable downtown businesses will be open, including the Port Hope Mercantile, the Chill Zone ice cream shop, Buck’s Port Hope Diner, the Port Hope Hotel Bar and Grill, the Blue Star General Store, and Port Hope Antiques. Gas stations Drive M-25, and the Pit Stop also will be open.

This month's film is "Scarlet Street" - a 1945 American film noir classic directed by Fritz Lang. The screenplay concerns two criminals who take advantage of a middle-aged painter in order to steal his artwork. The film is based on the French novel La Chienne by Georges de La Fouchardiere.
The principal actors Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennet, and Dan Duryea had earlier appeared together in "The Woman in the Window" (1944), also directed by Lang.
