The Revolution is coming to Port Sanilac!
Mark your calendars: Saturday, August 15 is America 250 Day at the Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum — a FREE full day of living history as part of America250MI, the statewide celebration of our nation's 250th anniversary.

Here's what the day holds (times being finalized with our partners — watch this page for the full confirmed schedule):

⁘ 10:00 AM — The Port Sanilac Methodist Church, the oldest congregation in town, opens its 175th anniversary year with a period worship service inside our historic church, conducted in attire and style as an 1851-era service. All are welcome.

⁘ 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM — A Revolutionary War Soldier's Encampment of the 8th Massachusetts Regiment, Continental regulars with ties to Michigan history, presented by the Swordsmanship Museum and Academy and the Military History Academy with support from Michigan Humanities. Planned demonstrations throughout the afternoon include musket firing and a swordsmanship cutting demonstration.

⁘ Midday — A public reading of the Declaration of Independence, planned with the Ottawa Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in the tradition of the first public readings of 1776.

⁘ Afternoon — "Fort Custer in the World Wars," a lecture by historian and author Brenda Leyndyke, featuring rare photographs of Michigan's great training ground — with Polar Bear Regiment artifacts from our own collection on display. Books available, with all proceeds benefiting the Fort Custer Historical Society.

⁘ All Day — Period docents across our 17 historic buildings, bringing the stories of Sanilac County to life.

And it's all part of Vintage Weekend in Port Sanilac — the Antique Boat Show and Vintage Car & Camper Show fill the harbor and downtown, and we're just half a mile south on M-25. Make a whole day of it!

Admission is FREE. Donations gratefully accepted to support the preservation and educational work of the Sanilac County Historical Society.

This program is funded in part by Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.
